A quick Friday review round-up includes Almodóvar and Edgar Wright
Plus we look forward to 2022's podcasting plans
It’s Friday, December 10, and here’s where we are…
I am going to jump back into podcasting this year.
I say that without a firm plan in place for exactly how and when that’s happening, but January will see the first steps toward having a regular show again, and I’m excited about it. As we’ve been revving up to the release of VOIR, I made an effort to record more podcast appearances than I have in quite a while, and it’s been a real pleasure.
One of the appearances I particularly enjoyed was on Blank Check with Griffin & David, where I joined them to wrap up their mini-series on the career of John Carpenter. If you don’t listen to their show, it’s a real pleasure for obsessive film nerds. They work their way through filmographies, one film at a time, with the big idea being that they discuss directors who had huge early success, allowing them to cash “blank checks” for the rest of their career. It started as a podcast devoted entirely to The Phantom Menace, so it’s safe to say it has gone through a few evolutions over the years. David Sims and Griffin Newman wear their loves on their sleeves, so anyone expecting a dry academic approach will be horrified, but that’s exactly what I enjoy. They throw themselves into these series, and much like the filmmakers, sometimes they seem to enjoy this thing they’ve chosen to do, and sometimes it can turn into a death march. Listening to them work their way through every single Tim Burton film is like listening to someone eat themselves to death using only chocolate.
I joined them to talk about The Ward, which really means I joined them to talk about the end of John Carpenter’s career as a director. I still hold out secret hope that he’ll whip out one more classic at some point when he gets a little fire in his belly, but for now, he appears to be perfectly happy touring with Cody and playing video games, and there’s nothing wrong with that. We talked about the experience of working with John on Masters of Horror, we discussed my strange connection to Carpenter over the years, and we digressed mightily, as one is wont to do on this show.
