The Hip Pocket #208 - Mike Mitchell

Time to pup some pupcorn and talk movies with the Spoonman

Now that we’re in the back half of the season, it’s time to start looking ahead at season three for us. I want to make sure there’s not a huge gap between the seasons, and we already have so many good guests lined up for season three that I want to start recording them and having those conversations.

Listening to these with a little bit of distance from the recording, I am as happy as I could be with the way the show is working now. The key is having a guest on who wants to have the conversation, and I had a little bit of an advantage this week because our guest is one of my movie buddies, a guy I can call up and go to the theater with, and I always enjoy chatting about movies with him. I knew we’d have a good conversation with him as a guest, but I didn’t expect it to be such a sincere and heartfelt chat. It feels like a side of our guest that you don’t always get to hear on his own show.

MIKE MITCHELL is best known these days as one of the hosts of the wildly-popular Doughboys podcast, where he reviews fast-food chain restaurants with his co-host, Nick “Tiger” Wiger. He is a prominent figure in the LA comedy scene, having trained at the UCB Theater, and he only seems to be picking up steam as an actor. This summer, you’ll see him in the second season of Peacock’s hit adaptation of the Twisted Metal videogame series, reprising his role of Stu, and he’s got a number of movies waiting to be released as well. You may have seen him in The Tomorrow War or on Netflix’s Love, or maybe you know him from his time with The Birthday Boys, a comedy troupe that had a two-season show on IFC, produced by Bob Odenkirk.

His picks today speak to who he is as a performer. There’s Tommy Boy, the movie that made a case for Chris Farley as a movie star. He also picked South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut, which he saw at the perfect impressionable age. And finally, he picked The Muppet Movie, which feels like the most Mike Mitchell film of all time.

Our response film was brand-new to Mike, which is always fun, especially when it’s something as silly as Amazon Women on the Moon.

Finally, this week’s selection for the Hip Pocket Hall of Fame was chosen because this episode was recorded the week that David Lynch passed away. I had no choice, so buckle up as we dig deep into Eraserhead.

NEXT TIME

I can’t even describe next week’s episode.

What happens when I invite one of my oldest friends on the show? Chaos. Absolute goddamn chaos. My buddy used to host these legendary movie nights here in LA, where he’d invite dozens of people to screen triple features of absolute lunacy, and we decided to take a trip through some of the highlights of those movie nights with a trio of the weirdest films we’ve ever covered. You want an obscure action film made by bored stuntmen in Flordia? We’ve got one. You want to watch Rip Torn terrorize people for a few hours? Done. And we’ve got to round it out with a movie made by an outsider artist so weird that it’s hard to even describe his work.

Also, if you’re not on the Patreon, you should check it out. We have two bonus episodes (which we’re calling The Back Pocket) available now. One’s a round-up of our favorite films from 2024, and the other is a tribute to David Lynch. While I look forward to the guests in the main feed, I love that The Back Pocket is primarily going to be the three of us just hanging out with each other. I adore Aundria and Craig, and I want to make sure we build plenty of time when it’s just us chatting about the films.

Anyway, be here next week. We spend pretty much two full hours laughing our faces off. It is a madhouse, and I can’t wait to share it with you. See you back here on Friday!
