The Eddie Murphy episode was HOLY SHIT WOW!!!!! I never saw it in the theater, but I sure as hell remember when I first saw it on cable back in '83. The scene in Torchy's...still iconic.

It's interesting that you tackle likeability from a (mostly) Hollywood perspective in terms of the clips that are discussed; it's a pretty evergreen studio note, to judge from film books etc., so worth the rebuttal to the conventional wisdom that your essay provides.
I'll go ahead and actually read this entry after saying: I abruptly turned off the movie I was watching (NIGHTMARE ALLEY 1947) when I remembered today was VOIR Day. I skipped straight to your episode.
