Booking the first season of any show is going to be tricky.
You’re essentially asking your guests to just go on faith that the show you want to make is actually going to work. They don’t know. At that point, you don’t know, either. It’s all a big experiment, so you need to invite people to participate who you’re confident are going to bring the goods no matter what.
I’ve really enjoyed being a guest on Screen Drafts over the last few years. It’s a chaotic, wildly-entertaining format for a show that depends on both topic and guests from week to week. It’s a new gamble every single time, and I’ve met some really lovely people during those drafts. One of my favorites is Bryan Cogman, who is probably best-known for his work as a writer and producer on Game of Thrones.
When you draft with someone repeatedly, you start to get a sense of who they are and what they like. I’ve talked about James Bond movies, Francis Ford Coppola, and Disney live-action adventure films with Bryan, and every time, I’ve walked away with a better picture of who he is. I was not surprised when he showed up for The Hip Pocket with three great movies and a ton of great conversation.
BRYAN COGMAN is today’s guest, and he’s showing his sensitive side with his choices. This might be a surprise if you primarily know him from his WGAw-nominatd work on Game Of Thrones as a writer/producer. He was educated at Juliard as an actor, and he’s certainly got a big soft spot in his heart for great performances. He’s also worked on remakes of Sword in the Stone and Zorro for Disney, with the latter in development as a series for Wilmer Valderama.
His three Hip Pocket selections were About A Boy, Broadway Danny Rose, and Lost in Translation. Aundria chose The Shape of Things as our response film.
Finally, Drew inducted Freebie & The Bean into the Hip Pocket Hall of Fame.

The Hip Pocket is hosted by Drew McWeeny and Aundria Parker.
Craig Ceravolo is the show’s bandleader and producer.
It is a Formerly Dangerous Production.
Sorry, but a production bottleneck meant we didn’t have a chance to prepare the carefully edited version of the transcript for this episode. There is an auto-generated one that you can access if you’re interested.
Bill Murray knows what happened. Next time you see him, feel free to ask.
NEXT TIME
I had a lot of fun with one of the Screen Drafts Legends this week, so why not up the stakes next week with one of the actual creators of the show?
If you know the show, then you’ll know exactly who’s joining us when I tell you that they picked Broadcast News, as well as Malice and Summer Hours. Craig picked the response film, the delightful True Stories, so that’s just one more reason you have to be here one week from today for another episode of The Hip Pocket.
